Introduction to the Swedenborgian Church of San Diego

“All life is religion, and the life of religion is to love God and to do good.”

The Church of the New Jerusalem (Swedenborgian Church) exists to help people to be open to the Lord’s presence and leading, and to facilitate their spiritual growth and well-being. The Church of the New Jerusalem bases its teachings on the Bible as illuminated by the works of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), a Swedish scientist and theologian. Swedenborg envisioned a new Christianity coming into being, revitalized by the Spirit of the Lord. Our congregation is a unique Christian community combining traditional worship with a progressive spiritual outlook and deeper understanding of Scripture. We seek to follow the divine will for our lives. As we learn and grow, insights gained from the ancient language of correspondences, begin to inform our responses and our reading of the Lord’s Word, the world, the book of nature, our dreams, as it is etched in the wisdom of our bodies, and on the narrative of our lives. We invite you to participate with others who are seeking to learn, heal, and deepen their spiritual journey, while they make manifest their dreams and create a better world for themselves and others. We support your spiritual growth through education, worship, fellowship, service, and the arts.

Swedenborg believed that “true worship consists in fulfilling uses and, therefore, expressing compassion in action.” As a church we seek to be true to his vision of Christianity as an active and vital force that calls us to live out our faith in service to one another. In keeping with our mission we offer several opportunities for growth and outreach including, but not limited to, our Sunday Worship Service and classes.
